The course leads to a Teaching Assistant qualification and will enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and learning in primary, secondary, further education or special schools. It covers a wide range of areas including early years and young people’s development, supporting those with disabilities or special educational needs and communication and professional relationships. In this vein, completion of this qualification will equip learners with the essential knowledge and skills required to work in an unsupervised support role within a school setting, for example:
- planning and preparing for learning activities
- using assessment strategies to promote learning
- responding to challenging behavior
- managing risks to health, safety and security in a work setting and off- site visits.
On completion of this unit, learners are able to progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools and into the workforce.
It is made up of 11 mandatory units which are based on knowledge and skills, totaling 32 credits. It aims at providing learners with a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children or young people in school environments. The 32-credit qualification covers the following topics:
- Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Schools as organisations
- Support learning activities
- Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour
- Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
- Support assessment for learning
- Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
- Support children and young people’s health and safety
- Understand child and young person development
- Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people
However, completion of this qualification is achieved through a combination of online learning and experience in the workplace. All the units within this qualification are vocationally based, directly helping you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work in an unsupervised support role within a school setting.
Some of the units are assessed through written assignments and some through workplace practice. You will be given assignment tasks throughout the course with deadlines for submission of this work. These will be assessed by your course tutor and you will be given feedback. All units are internally assessed, which means you are not going to sit for an examination. Assessment enables the learner’s workplace practice to provide evidence for individual units as well as the whole qualification. Methods of assessment could include:
- Inference of knowledge from direct observation of practice
- Witness evidence when directed by the sector skills assessment strategy
- Professional discussion
- Reflection on own practice in real work situations
- Written assignments
- Learner’s own plans and written records
- task set by us for knowledge learning outcomes only.
The qualification will be pass or refer and all the assessment criteria of the chosen units must
be achieved in order to obtain a pass.
You will be observed in the classroom by an assessor who will write a report on your work. There will be between 1 and 3 observations throughout the course. This course requires a minimum of 8 hours each week working or volunteering in a school environment.
You are expected to find your own placement prior to enrolling on the course by contacting schools in your area or that you have connections with. Most schools will make arrangements to take on volunteers towards the end of the summer break. If you are unable to get a placement, let us know and we can help.
You will be provided with a username and password, to log in our online learning platform. You will be able to access your course material, use the online resources and submit your assignments. You are required to participate in online forum, independent study, practical and creative work. If you have any queries, you are able to contact your tutor or one of our advisers by email, phone or arrange a virtual meeting (if necessary). There are no formal entry requirements for this qualiﬁcation but learners will need to be at least 16 years of age. Learners should possess a formal qualification in any discipline and a good level of literacy and numeracy or willingness to work towards one during the programme.
It is suitable for learners aged 16 and above. In order to secure a place on this e-learning programme, you must be able to meet the following conditions:
- Access to the internet with a valid e-mail address.
- Ability to study for minimum of 8 hours in a week for the duration of the programme
£1,500.00 GBP (All inclusive). There are four parts to the cost of your course: Tuition Fees include Centre registration, Awarding Body Registration, Exam/Assessment Fees and Certification. You are able to pay by installment.
You are usually expected to complete the course within 6 months from the enrollment date. We however give you our learner an additional 2 months if they fail to complete during the normal duration which stretches the time period to a maximum 8 months!
Learners are able to complete the course within a shorter time depending on a number of factors which includes own commitment. However, learner joining the course with evidence of prior learning with a substantial number of credits will obviously be able to complete quicker! This is because the guided learning hours will also reduce.
